Katy’s Story… as a teacher at M-Pulsive who has literally grown up here, Katy is not only passionate about spreading the power of performance but also not labelling kids ‘shy’, leading them to believe they can’t ever perform.
This is Katy’s story- and as her teacher all the way up through until she left for college, I can vouch for every part of this. We often laugh about it now, that Katy didn’t speak to me for about two years! She was a shy kid, but did she, her parents or I put that as a barrier to her getting up on stage? No.
From Katy...
"When I first started dancing at age 6,1 was extremely shy and quiet. I would rarely speak in class, I was constantly nervous about getting steps wrong, and I often doubted myself. Being in front of others felt intimidating, and performing seemed overwhelming. However, dance and performing gradually became the very thing that helped me grow in confidence.
I discovered that I truly love performing and being on stage and the thing that once seemed so scary is now one of favourite places to be and a space where can express myself freely.
I'm beyond grateful to my family and I for getting myself up ons that first stage.
Through performing, working as part of a team, and pushing myself outside of my comfort zone, Learned resilience, discipline, and self-belief.
Dance taught me that mistakes are part of learning and that confidence is something you build through experience. Over time, I tound my voice not just physically through movement, but personally as well. Now, as a dance teacher and a student in full time dance college at nearly 20 years old, l am proud of how far I have come and l owe most of it to the fact I got on that stage all those years ago. I use my own journey to support students who may feel the way I once did, encouraging them to believe in themselves and reminding them that confidence can grow in the most unexpected places."
The first photo above- of Katy, red flapper dress, dancing a street version of Downton Abbey in our 10th Anniversary Show, I believe was a turning point in her confidence. All of a sudden she wasn’t just on stage- she was owning the stage ✨ People were blown away by her shine!
Moral of Katy’s story… shy kids CAN perform. And shyness does not need to define you or your abilities 💪🏼
